World Cup Update 6-24-10

June 24th, 2010 by soccer

world cup soccerWell we are deep into the tournament now and things are starting to shake out in terms of which big teams will make it through to the next round, which ones have flopped (two big notables) and which teams have risen out of the pack to surprise us.

Today the big news is that Italy have bombed out of the tournament and now have to slink home to Italy with their tails between their legs and can surely expect some major flack from the Italian press and public. And well they should. They played badly in their games. No flare, no creativeness, and no stone wall of defense to carry them along as they have ion the past. Today they sucked. They found themselves down 2 nill before they bothered to wake up. By then it was too late. The last twenty minutes of the game were pretty exciting but only becasue Slovakia did not back down when Italy netted a couple of late goals.

Can anyone tell me a good reason why Diego Milito was not used extensively in this tournament? I think the Italian made some bad choices. Ciao baby!

The other bomb was of course France who completely meleted down and imploded in this tournament. Not that I was surprised by that or anything.

The USA had a hugely entertaining third match that took them from going home in ten minutes to top of group after the late goal by Donovon. I am still pumped up from that excitement. Hope they can carry on some of that magic against Ghana on Saturday.

At this point I would have to say that while the Dutch, Germans, USA, South Korea, Portugal, Mexico and Spain have played well it looks to be a South American tournament this year. The teams from SA have played very well this year and I would be shocked if the final did not include one of the SA teams. I am picking Argentina to be one but would not be surprised if Uruguay or Brazil reach the final.

Who are you picking now that we are down to the round of 16?
