Women’s World Cup 2011 – Down to the Quarters

July 6th, 2011 by soccer

women's world cupHave you been enjoying the Women’s World Cup games from Germany? Well to be honest I am a World Cup nut and watch everything I can in both the men’s and women’s competitions. So as you can imagine I have been enjoying the last two weeks of games. There have been some great moments so far in Germany and I expect many more to come as we go through the quarter final rounds on into the final later in July.

The expected favorites are doing well with Germany, USA, and Brasil cruising into the quarter final rounds. Brasil has been interesting in that they were matched up well or outplayed for half of two of their first three games but when they decided to shift gears they took over the games and dominated. That was true today as they ratcheted it up against E New Guinea and won easily 3-0. Germany has looked pretty good but it remains to be seen if they have an Achilles heal in their set piece defending.

The USA vs Sweden match is about to kick off so time to go watch what may prove to be an exciting match. My favorite moment of the tourney so far was when Megan Rapinoe of the USA scored a very nice goal and then celebrated by picking up the field mic and singing into it. Priceless. Video highlights of matches can be found here

Who is the most technically skilled team at this tournament in your eyes? My answer? Well despite rooting loudly for them the USA is NOT the most technically skilled team. In fact if they were they would win easily. I would have to vote for Japan. Let me know who you would pick below.
